[:1]Hi All
I have the following system:
Core i7 920 ocd to 3ghz
6gb of 1666 mhz ram
Asus Rampage 3 extreme mobo
dual 5870 1gb vapour x graphics cards
RAID 0 dual 96gb ocz SSD's
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
I have:
Core Optimizer
Patched fully (FA and SUPCOM)
Sorian AI
Problem:
Slowdown huge.
Observations:
Slowdown occurs in:
large maps, large unit count
Windowed mode
Non-Windowed mode
Windowed mode with graphics set to low
Windowed mode graphics set to high
Non-Windowed mode graphics set to low
Non-Windowed mode graphics set to high
Core optimizer on or off
Sorian AI installed/not installed
In windowed mode I monitored my system resources:
CPU with or without core optimizer, no cores reached saturation
FA was only using 1.2GB of memory before slowdown occured
Interesting observation: The static building graphics do not seem to slow down. For example the small power plants for the UAE (the little guys that generate 20 power) still spin at the same rate. Meaning its as if the game is purposely slowing down the units rather than the game bottle necking. Also, during campaign no matter how many thousands of units are on the map, it never slows down.
Now, do not need to force windows 7 to address more than 2GB of memory for the program because the program isnt even using 1.5 GB of memory. Can somebody Please, please, please help me? I love this game to pieces. I built my machine specifically so I could play the S$%# out of this game because I had an older dual core that chugged. Please help, or direct me to somebody who can help. I have read all the threads, all the forums I could. In total probably 12 hours of research or more.
EDIT: I see some people still have problems. I thought people could play through huge maps without any slowdowns. Why was the unit cap bumped to 2000 for sorian AI if there are still slowdowns?
Please, please help.
Sincerely
Darth.|||I know this isnt a tech support forum, but I cannot find an active tech support forum. Please show mercy. Please? I am a pretty good Supcom player. I can take on a couple cheating Sorian AI's and win. BUT PLEASE HELP!|||You are fighting a loosing battle. You can only improve the problem because the problem is the engine itself. Its just badly coded if I remember correctly.
The issue is the AI. It sends orders to dead units. Again, if I remember correctly.
If you were to play against another human you would not experience slow down. Or at least not nearly as much.
Your system is not the problem, its the coding of the game.|||Some tips;
- avoid using anything more than 1 or 2 AI opponents - it's better to have one or 2 cheating AI's rather than 3 or 4 regular ones
- the best performance comes in human vs. human games
- the larger the map, the sooner you'll hit the slowdown
- the more objects on the map, the sooner you'll hit the slowdown
Even with human opponents, you'll hit the slowdown - as most of the slowdown is really just the number of units (and objects like wreckage) that have to be tracked, animated and often, the pathfinding overhead in moving so many units.
There have been some some efforts to reduce or minimize the problem, Sorians AI is one which helps. Another mod that comes to mind is one that eliminates wreckage, but none of them put the issue to bed.
The long and short of it - FA was an ambitious achievement for it's day. However, it attempts to push the boundary of what is possible iand it's memory management just can't cope very well. Adding in the additional load for each AI and you can see where things are heading. Many hoped the SC2 would address these issues, but it didn't. We can only hope for an SC3 that does. In the meantime however....
I've worked extensively with the AI over the last 3 years, and I can't say I've ever found the 'dead units' issue that slinki refers to. I've certainly found some busy and/or redundant code, and a great deal of oddly coded units, but the smoking gun still eludes me. In my own work, I've greatly improved the performance, but in doing so, I've made hundreds of alterations to units, the AI code, and even reworked many of the maps.
As a result, I can play on 40km maps, with 2 humans and 3 AI and not really see a peformance hit until about the 1 hour mark.|||I did not see if you had stated it, but are you using v3599(last official version) or v3603 (GPG beta patch that is not official)? In case you do not know, start FA and in the top right you will see some numbers with the last four digits identifying the version number. The beta patch helps quite a bit with slowdowns, at least from my end it helped.|||yep. ditch the AI. they suck anyway, and RUIN performance.
