[:1]Hi All
I have the following system:
Core i7 920 ocd to 3ghz
6gb of 1666 mhz ram
Asus Rampage 3 extreme mobo
dual 5870 1gb vapour x graphics cards
RAID 0 dual 96gb ocz SSD's
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
I have:
Core Optimizer
Patched fully (FA and SUPCOM)
Sorian AI
Problem:
Slowdown huge.
Observations:
Slowdown occurs in:
large maps, large unit count
Windowed mode
Non-Windowed mode
Windowed mode with graphics set to low
Windowed mode graphics set to high
Non-Windowed mode graphics set to low
Non-Windowed mode graphics set to high
Core optimizer on or off
Sorian AI installed/not installed
In windowed mode I monitored my system resources:
CPU with or without core optimizer, no cores reached saturation
FA was only using 1.2GB of memory before slowdown occured
Interesting observation: The static building graphics do not seem to slow down. For example the small power plants for the UAE (the little guys that generate 20 power) still spin at the same rate. Meaning its as if the game is purposely slowing down the units rather than the game bottle necking. Also, during campaign no matter how many thousands of units are on the map, it never slows down.
Now, do not need to force windows 7 to address more than 2GB of memory for the program because the program isnt even using 1.5 GB of memory. Can somebody Please, please, please help me? I love this game to pieces. I built my machine specifically so I could play the S$%# out of this game because I had an older dual core that chugged. Please help, or direct me to somebody who can help. I have read all the threads, all the forums I could. In total probably 12 hours of research or more.
EDIT: I see some people still have problems. I thought people could play through huge maps without any slowdowns. Why was the unit cap bumped to 2000 for sorian AI if there are still slowdowns?
Please, please help.
Sincerely
Darth.|||I know this isnt a tech support forum, but I cannot find an active tech support forum. Please show mercy. Please? I am a pretty good Supcom player. I can take on a couple cheating Sorian AI's and win. BUT PLEASE HELP!|||You are fighting a loosing battle. You can only improve the problem because the problem is the engine itself. Its just badly coded if I remember correctly.
The issue is the AI. It sends orders to dead units. Again, if I remember correctly.
If you were to play against another human you would not experience slow down. Or at least not nearly as much.
Your system is not the problem, its the coding of the game.|||Some tips;
- avoid using anything more than 1 or 2 AI opponents - it's better to have one or 2 cheating AI's rather than 3 or 4 regular ones
- the best performance comes in human vs. human games
- the larger the map, the sooner you'll hit the slowdown
- the more objects on the map, the sooner you'll hit the slowdown
Even with human opponents, you'll hit the slowdown - as most of the slowdown is really just the number of units (and objects like wreckage) that have to be tracked, animated and often, the pathfinding overhead in moving so many units.
There have been some some efforts to reduce or minimize the problem, Sorians AI is one which helps. Another mod that comes to mind is one that eliminates wreckage, but none of them put the issue to bed.
The long and short of it - FA was an ambitious achievement for it's day. However, it attempts to push the boundary of what is possible iand it's memory management just can't cope very well. Adding in the additional load for each AI and you can see where things are heading. Many hoped the SC2 would address these issues, but it didn't. We can only hope for an SC3 that does. In the meantime however....
I've worked extensively with the AI over the last 3 years, and I can't say I've ever found the 'dead units' issue that slinki refers to. I've certainly found some busy and/or redundant code, and a great deal of oddly coded units, but the smoking gun still eludes me. In my own work, I've greatly improved the performance, but in doing so, I've made hundreds of alterations to units, the AI code, and even reworked many of the maps.
As a result, I can play on 40km maps, with 2 humans and 3 AI and not really see a peformance hit until about the 1 hour mark.|||I did not see if you had stated it, but are you using v3599(last official version) or v3603 (GPG beta patch that is not official)? In case you do not know, start FA and in the top right you will see some numbers with the last four digits identifying the version number. The beta patch helps quite a bit with slowdowns, at least from my end it helped.|||yep. ditch the AI. they suck anyway, and RUIN performance.

[WIP]Forged Alliance Forever-0.3.1.0b! 3605/Vault/1v1 ladder
[:1]I'm happy to announce that the first public release is out !
0.2.0.0b :
http://88.191.143.136/faforever/FAForeverLobby.msi
http://users.edpnet.be/zepilot/FAForeverLobby.msi
Forged Alliance Forever - Lobby 0.2.0.0b
********************************
- Why using it ? Gpgnet is still alive !
- What is it doing better than GPGNet ?
Here is a few reasons :
- GPGNet is not alive. It's still up, but not maintained anymore.
- Live Replay Bot equivalent is working all the time.
- Chat is not limited to 100 peoples. And it's faster. You can also join with any IRC Client on Mibbit.
- Custom games : No bug when you create a new game with the same name as an old one. You stay in chat. Games are announced in the lobby.
- 1v1 Matchmaker : TrueSkill matchmaking. Better than Elo, take ANY custom game in account for your rank !
- Why TrueSkill is better ? See here : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52273&p=908046#p908046
- All the games are using the most recent and debugged version of FA, ladder included !
- LeaderBoard : It works. It doesn't mix with vanilla or whatever.
- And hopefully an update will come this week with a working Live Replay announcer in chat, and an automatic replay vault !
- It's faster, more responsive, take less memory, and it's actively supported by his developpers ! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QABrzUsCkOQ)
And last but not least :
- Forged Alliance is patched to 3604.
What is 3604 ? It's the "official" 3603 patch + power lobby + balance changes from the mods.
You've got the real deal : Patched .exe, patched dll, no need to activate any mod. Memory leaks and such are fixed.
PowerLobby features :
- support for 12 players (+ any number of observers)
- auto-teams.
- Big map preview.
- Scores can be disabled.
.. and more !
"But so I can't play anymore on GPGNet without duplicating my install ?"
Wrong ! Forged Alliance Forever is doing the smart thing : It duplicates your bin folder, and fork all the game datas as needed. You don't need to duplicate your install and can play both in Forged Alliance Forever AND Gpgnet !
Know issues :
--------------
- If you want to see a replay, you have to do it with the forgedAlliance.exe in the binFAF folder of your FA folder.
- The matchmaker works, but there is not yet any 1vs1 specific ladder, but a global leaderboard.
As soon as there is enough people, a separate leaderboard will be added.
If at any point you've got a big problem (doesn't start or something), download

and replace the file in your folder.

I won't fix or add anything not posted there. It helps me keeping track of bugs and patchs. You must register to bitbucket in order to attach files.
Thanks for Moritz for the powelobby, Legion Darrath for the 3603 modifications, all the alpha testers that give their time, in particular Nesar and Ephez, and big thanks for wolfmic who is hosting the server.|||i thought they finished it ages ago they just never released it for some weird reason.|||wow this is really awsome. keep up the good work!
and sorry i was afk last night over gpgnet :)
you should talk to mortiz and rock about this, they are the ones working on the fa-ladder and i think they might have something like this in the works.|||jsut give it to motroz and he'll have it running seconds lol.|||reddev33|||By the way, I'm finishing the logging page for the Open Alpha this week :
|||check your pm m8|||Cool stuff!|||I was a little worried that you took on too much with this, but since you've actually got a working lobby this period of time... wow.
|||Ze_PilOt|||Technical stuff. Zep is basically following the industry standard there.
Google password hashing.
The password isn't stored, but something relating to it is. The password itself can't be retrieved, so if you forget, nobody will remind you of it.|||I'm planning to implement a TrueSkill ladder system.
It normally works better than ELO, and it's suitable for 2v2, 3v3, FFA... (Where ELO will consider 2v2 as 1v1 and so will have a ranking for every pair of players)
It's in good way so far (planning to finish a proof of concept of the trueSkill ladder next week)|||but why not say you passwrod is enqurted and tehre is no way of telling waht it is when you ahve choozen it.
I be more than happy to test it
|||BulletMagnet|||that what i meant lol the string thiny
and nice.|||Ze, I'd like to say that whatever happens. Do not involve reddev in the project for any reason whatsoever. It looks great and hopefully Moritz and Rick will get in touch with you to integrate the 3603 ladder.|||Legion Darrath|||I'll certainly be watching this. If it's fairly active, I'll probably end up coming back to FA for a while :) .|||This is absolutely fantastic. Talk about an embarrassing kick up the rear end for GPG and THQ! I will be watching this, and please count me in for any balancing decisions once it gets to the point of releasing new patches. Also, someone has to notify Sorian of this so that he can make absolutely SURE that CT knows what is being done here.|||A mail has been send and he answered.
Short:
GPG does not own FA anymore.
THQ has the publication rights and Enix the Supcom IP.
In the previous letter from THQ, they say that there will be no more support for FA (QA, patch, testing). It's no more viable economically.
GPG does not own the game, THQ stoped the support, Square Enix didn't say a word on it (and the support of Supcom2 is on a halt by the way).
In one sentence:
Nobody cares.|||
Holy bullocks! I stop monitoring the boards beyond what I've already posted in for a few weeks and look what happens!
*sigh* Wish I had the time still to really get involved in this.
|||After some tests tonight :
I've still have to smooth the login process, and there is a little bug server-side.
But the server is up and running. Tomorrow I will release the first open client.|||I would rather involve reddev than Rock.|||Ze_PilOt|||randomlegend
