The black art of microing ASF swarms

I would like to introduce to you all, after what seems like an eternity, an actual topic related to tactics in FA!
So, I've been trying to figure this out. I have 2 computers, and I set them up with equal numbers of fighters. Invariably what happens is one side comes out the victor, generally in a lopsided manner.
So my question is, what are the best tactics to use when managing ASF swarms? I've seen replays of top players where they continually are making constant move commands, making their swarms fly in tight, unified circles. However, when I try that, invariably my micromanaged side comes out quite badly on the losing end compared to the side which was simply set up on a patrol.
Is it best just to give an attack mov e to the swarm in the general direction of the other swarm, and just let them be? Or should I be giving them individual targets (which when I try to do in the heat of battle, I end up giving a lot of move commands or assist commands by accident)? Either way, all my attempts at micromanaging the battle seem the be counterproductive and lead to worse outcomes than when I simply let them find their own targets.
Micromanaging ASFs versus restorers does seem to be a wise thing, though, as if they are all targetting a single restorer, that one restorer will go down much faster than if all the fighters are targetting different restorers. I found I could take down 30 restorers with 45 ASFs or so, with a lopsided ASF victory, but below 40 ASFs versus 30 restorers the restorers had the lopsided victory.
It just seems that when it come to large air battles, lopsided victories for one side or the other is almost the inevitable outcome.
What are your thoughts on fighter managment? And is there a good link somewhere dealing specifically with fighter management?|||Shoot first -> win|||Don't let them get behind you. If they do, they'll just open up a continuous stream of death.
