Energy Storage question

[:1]I'm not sure if I'm reading the on screen icon in FA below correctly. To me, it reads 1200 of 1200 total is available for use. In other words, 1200 is the total energy that can be stored in this particular Energy Storage container and since this container is maxed out, 1200 is available for withdrawal or use. Is this right? How does one withdraw or use stored energy? Why does it say Idle? Volatile? Thanks.

Energy and Mass Storage start working, 100% automagically, once they're built. If you look at the two economy bars up in the top left corner of the screen, you'll see your storage capacity, and how much you have in storage. Those are your totals; they include every storage, power generator, mass extractor, etc.
It's idle because you haven't given it any orders, and hasn't decided to attack anything. Since you can't give storage any actual instructions, it's always going to remain idle.|||Storage is dealt with in total, not by individual storage unit.
Energy is used from storage when your expenditure exceeds your income. So when that energy income number is negative, you spend energy from the storage, which is represented in the UI by that orange bar shrinking towards the zero.|||BulletMagnet|||Storage doesn't produce anything, nor does it attack. It can't move either. It simply sits there, and collects and gives resources for you.
The label is there because other units might not be idle. Notice that that box and label is there for every unit and building?|||X-Cubed|||There is virtually no reason to ever build energy storage (a few exceptions, but you’re well away from that). in 3 years of playing I never built 1.|||pkc|||reddev33|||In the current official version of FA, there is no reason to ever build energy storages, as pkc said unless you are BrainSteel or some really creative player. Factories and engineers also add to energy storage. But in the 3603 beta patch balance, energy storages are vital.
So bofhlusr, build factories and engineers to increase energy storage without building storage structures. What do you mean see activity in the energy storage unit? The storage unit just sits there and provides storage. There is no way to make it do something.|||LOL you use storage as it stores more storage then any enginner.
plus the engery storage is the same for building it around pgens as it increase the output and also helps for later useage. same for the mass.|||pkc|||Why do they argue with us x-cubed? LoL.|||I've used energy storage....once? to hold enough energy to get out a fast strat bomber in a 1v1. It's basically useless though, so I think Reddev is just trolling. He's bad, but not THAT bad.
And I always build one in a 3603 game (otherwise no overcharge), obviously, but that's not what we're talking about here.
Also, pkc, you don't have to be a math god to balance your mass income and expenditure. It relies almost entirely on game sense, which you just sort of pick up as you play more and at higher levels. At my peak, I would usually have almost balanced mass income (slightly negative) and almost balanced energy income (slightly positive).|||yeah, but this is reddev 33, not 32.
i dunno, once you factor in reclaiming and loss of mexes/pgens i just found it easier to ensure a deficit of mass and surplus of energy than concentrate on perfect balance. brainsteel was one of the few i ever saw run a knife-edge for entire matches.|||pkc|||E-Storages are just useless, exept at 3603 (there you need one to OC)
reddev33|||X-Cubed|||bofhlusr|||Well 32, you should know better.|||pkc|||splattedone|||reddev33|||Protip: When you want advice on anything, do not listen to Reddev. Ever.|||Legion Darrath
